New Week, New Grinds

Beverages, Fiction, What are we up to?

We’re smoothing things out at Between the Grinds.

We’re giving British Literature another week due to some new developments to our cafe menu. Fear not, we won’t lead you astray. We love our coffee but we also want to give our customers what they want. Your requests for healthy blended beverages have been heard. Without further ado, let us introduce our new smoothie lineup.

Smoothies and the Brits

How can smoothies possibly relate to British literature, you ask? Our featured smoothie of the week is Stardust. We named it after our favorite novel by the British author Neil Gaiman.

Stardust is about a boy who summons a star from the heavens to win the heart of the girl he loves. This tale is full of witches, pirates, and ruthless brothers fighting for the seat to their dying father’s kingdom. At the center of it all is a beautiful star named Yvaine and everyone is (literally) dying for her heart.

Our Stardust smoothie is a delicious blend of blueberries, strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, and papaya. This drink is sure to satisfy any craving.

Reading Between the Grinds Needs You

Every donation made with a smoothie purchase comes with a free copy of Neil Gaiman’s Stardust. All donations will benefit our Reading Between the Grinds literacy program. Your donations are used to purchase reading materials, text books, and other implements to help those in your community struggling with illiteracy. Help your community thrive today.

We’re not afraid to share.

 Author of the Week

Our new author of the week is Neil Gaiman.

Born on November 10, 1960, Neil Gaiman wrote his first book at the age of 24. Gaiman is a sensational writer known for his novels American Gods and Coraline.

Influenced by Alan Moore, J.R.R. Tolkien, and Edgar Alan Poe, Gaiman has written his fair share of fantasy. His stories are always darkly whimsical and full of interesting characters. He has written numerous books for children as well as young adults but his adult fiction still captivates a large audience.

Gaiman has also gained recognition for his graphic novel series called The Sandman. This series was written by Neil Gaiman and drawn by Dave McKean. It’s a lengthy tale involving the entity of the Sandman gathering his dreaming implements after he has been held captive for centuries. The Sandman series was completed in 1988 but they decided to resume the story in 2013 because of its enormous following.

Curious about Neil? Check out his work on his webpage. All of his books are on our shelves. Let us introduce you to Neil Gaiman.

Do you have a favorite smoothie combo? We’d love to hear about it.

Already in love with Neil Gaiman? Tell us what you’ve read.

  1. Those smoothies look amazing!! I’m certainly going to try the Huckleberry Finn and Stardust! All of them look like they’d be great for a quick breakfast fix versus something sugary and not nutritious. Just about a year ago I read my first book by Neil Gaiman but haven’t read anything since by him. When I get a chance, possibly Spring Break, I’ll have to read another! The book I read was ‘The Ocean at the End of the Lane’ and was pleasantly surprised! It was quite different but such a unique story that I throughly enjoyed! I may actually try to read that one again over Spring Break! 🙂

  2. I haven’t read The Ocean at the End of the Lane yet. It’s definitely on my reading list though. You should check out The Graveyard Book. It is a young adult novel but its absolutely fantastic. It’s about an orphaned boy named Nobody (Bod) who is raised by ghosts and other creatures in a graveyard after his family is murdered. The book centers around the many adventures Bod encounters in and out of the graveyard. Gaiman won an American Newbery Award for this novel. If you love a little dark fantasy, you should try this one out.

  3. Great blog. Love your style of writing. I dig comics so Gaiman is well recognized. For me, any smoothie including strawberries is pretty much going to be a favorite of mine. I’m going to have to come visit your shop.
